On October 13, Wudang Mountain in Shiyan, Hubei once again captured the attention of the world, as Zhiyin Hubei · 2024 Global Travel Operators Conference was successfully held here.

What is the charm of Wudang Mountain, the host place of the conference?

Wudang Mountain, known as Taihe Mountain in ancient times, is located in Shiyan City, Hubei Province. This magical area, situated between 110 degrees east longitude and 30 degrees north latitude, is renowned both domestically and internationally for its vibrant natural scenery, magnificent ancient architectural complex, vast and tranquil Tai Chi holy waters, mysterious Wudang martial arts, and unique Taoist culture, and has been hailed as "an unparalleled paradise since ancient times and the foremost celestial mountain in the world."

The ancient architectural complex of Wudang Mountain is not only the most complete, largest, and highest-ranking Taoist site in China but also in the world. It was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994. Construction began during the Tang Dynasty, continued through the Song and Yuan Dynasties, and reached its peak during the Ming Dynasty, earning the historical saying: "The north witnessed the building of the Forbidden City, while the south the repair of Wudang Mountain."

During the Ming Dynasty, in Wudang Mountain spanning an area of 800 square miles, the 33 complexes, such as 9 palaces, 8 temples, 36 monasteries, 72 rock temples, 39 bridges, and 12 pavilions, formed a magnificent landscape featuring "one monastery every five miles and one palace every ten miles, each with exquisite red walls and green tiles."

The Zixiao Palace is a dazzling gem within this vast area, embodying the essence of Taoist culture and the splendor of architectural art. It is a must-visit site for those who seek Taoist wisdom and practice lifestyle of health and wellness.

The Zixiao Palace is one of the most complete and largest palaces within the Wudang Mountain Taoist complex. In 1982, it was designated as a key national cultural relic protection unit by the State Council.

Why was it called the Zixiao Palace? Zixiao symbolized the Purple Micro Star constellation in the heaven, where the emperor resided, thus, the Zixiao Palace meant the purple altar at the center of heaven and earth. It was initially built during the Northern Song Dynasty's Xuanhe period (1119-1125 AD), rebuilt during the Yuan Dynasty, and named the Zixiao Yuansheng Palace. After being destroyed in warfare, it was rebuilt in the tenth year of the Yongle period of the Ming Dynasty (1412 AD) and was granted the name the Taixuan Zixiao Palace.

The existing buildings of the Zixiao Palace comprise 182 rooms, covering an area of 8,553 square meters, with a total construction and site area of 74,000 square meters. The complex features a series of structures built in succession from top to bottom, including the Longhu Hall, the Stele Pavilion, the Shifang Hall, the Zixiao Grand Hall, and the Shengwenmu Hall, both sides of which are separated into a three-courtyard layout by some buildings, like auxiliary ones.

The Zixiao Palace sits against Zhanqi Peak with an altitude of 804 meters, facing peaks such as Sangong, Wulao, and the Great and Small Baizhu. Plus, it boasts Lei Shen Cave on the right and Penglai Peak on the left. The surrounding mountains form a shape reminiscent of "two dragons playing with pearls," creating a perfect Feng Shui treasure land, thus has been hailed as Zixiao Blessed Land and Yunwai Qingdu, namely a place of earthly tranquility beyond the Clouds.

Looking up along the central axis, you can appreciate the tiered terraces and palaces constructed along the mountain, and on either side of the axis stand symmetrical, carefully-composed and well-distributed buildings characterized by splendidly red walls and green tiles.

The Zixiao Palace's architectural style merges the ethereal nature of Taoism with the solemnity of royalty, every brick and tile reflecting the wisdom and craftsmanship of ancient craftsmen.

The Zixiao Grand Hall, the core of the Zixiao Palace, is the sole double-eaved hip-and-gable wooden hall from the Ming Dynasty. This building, one of the few of its kind in the country, is featured by a scientifically rational structure and layout, an artistically harmonious style, and integrates seamlessly with the natural environment, showcasing a unique character among the ancient buildings of Wudang Mountain. The roof style hierarchy is second only to the highest- ranking hip roof of royal buildings, with a width and depth of five bays and a total height of 20.16 meters, showcasing an imposing grandeur.

The ridge of the hall is adorned with glazed tiles shaped like flying birds and running beasts. At both ends of the ridge peak, there are decorative auspicious mythological figures called "chiwen" that appear to swallow the ridge with the anticipation of warding off evil spirits and preventing fires. The ridge itself is composed of six three-colored glazed flying dragons, with a gilded vase positioned in the center. The craftsmen smartly designed four iron chains for support, with the other ends tied to the hands of four children. This Ming Dynasty palace-style construction embodies mechanical principles in a dynamic form.

The eaves of the roof curl upward, resembling a phoenix in full swing ready to soar, and showcase the ancient pursuit of ideology of the unity of heaven and man.

Inside the hall, the architraves, Dougong brackets (also called bucket arches), and ceiling are all adorned with colorful patterns. The coffered ceiling features a relief of two dragons playing with a pearl, and 36 giant cedar pillars stand majestically throughout the hall. The entire building, with its golden embellishments and azure hues, exudes an atmosphere of grandeur and tranquility.

A Dougong is a complex bracket set that extends outside to allow a wide eave or porch and connects the roof and pillar, bearing the load of upper structure, and transferring it to the lower columns. The structure of Dougong bracket sets in the Zixiao Palace is the essence of its architectural art. The upper eaves feature 56 sets of Dougong brackets with three projections on a single -eave and double-ridge, while the lower eaves consist of 72 sets of gilded Dougong brackets with two projections on a double-ridge. These not only serve a structural purpose by bearing immense weight but also showcase decorative artistry, with exquisite carvings and paintings that leave onlookers in awe.

The Golden Hall and the Zixiao Palace share a unified architectural style and have some similarities. The Golden Hall is reputed as the Palace of Returning to Authenticity and serves as the ancestral hall of the Wudang sect of Taoism. This hall is the largest and highest-ranking existing gilded bronze hall in China, featuring advanced aesthetic concepts and unparalleled craftsmanship.

Every blade of grass and tree and every stele and stone here seem to convey the profundity and mystery of Taoist culture. As Laozi said, "The Dao that can be told is not the eternal Dao; the name that can be named is not the eternal name." Here, the perfect fusion of Taoist culture and architectural aesthetics fully reflects the ancients' pursuit of the philosophical ideology of the unity of heaven and man.

Wudang mountain, featuring magnificent building complex and famous Taoist holy site, has been recognized as one of the seventy-two blessed sites of Taoism.

Since ancient times, the Zixiao Palace in Wudang Mountain has been closely linked to Daoist culture. It serves as the primary venue for grand ritual ceremonies during significant Daoist festivals, such as March 3 and September 9 of lunar calendar. It is also the headquarters of the Wudang Mountain Daoist Association. From the site selection and layout to the architectural details, everything is intricately connected to Daoist culture.

Legend has it that the Emperor Zhenwu was born as the prince of the Kingdom of Jingle under the reign of the Yellow Emperor. He was exceptionally intelligent and devoted to the Dao, vowing to save all living beings. After receiving guidance from the Jade Purity Saint Ancestor, Ziqi Yuanjun, he ascended to immortality and transformed into a great Taoist deity. Using Wudang Mountain as his base, he began to promote the teachings of the Dao, marking the beginning of Wudang Taoism.

The fundamental spirit of Wudang culture is the core value of Wudang Taoism. If it can be summarized in two Chinese characters, it would be Taihe. Over 600 years ago, Emperor Yongle bestowed the title of Great Mountain of Taihe upon Wudang Mountain. It’s the Supreme Harmony that can be called Taihe, which is the path of auspiciousness, conducive to the growth of all things.

Apart from Taoist culture, Wudang Mountain is also one of the important origins of traditional Chinese martial arts. The Wudang school of martial arts, founded by Zhang Sanfeng, is one of the significant branches of Chinese martial arts and has had a profound impact on the development of martial arts in China.

Beyond the competition venues, Tai Chi has become a widespread phenomenon. In the streets and alleys at the foot of Wudang Mountain, you can often see elegantly dressed individuals in Taoist robes, students wielding the Eight Immortals' staffs, and elderly practitioners carrying Tai Chi swords.

Cultural inheritance relies on fresh blood. Grounded in excellent traditional culture, the Tai Chi inheritors and practitioners of Wudang Mountain take up their mobile phones and cameras to unveil the mysterious veil of the immortal mountain for serene mental cultivation to countless online viewers. They explain the profound and complex Taoist philosophy in simple and understandable terms and demonstrate Tai Chi movements from multiple angles, attracting numerous followers both at home and abroad.

Tai Chi is the symbol of China's excellent traditional culture and a gift from the Chinese nation to the people of the world. At present, more than 500 million people in more than 150 countries around the world are practicing Tai Chi. In recent years, 100,000 foreign friends who love Chinese Kung Fu have come to Wudang Mountain to practice martial arts, which has become a bridge and link to promote Tai Chi culture and spread Wudang martial arts.

From 2,500 years ago when Yinxi retreated to Wudang Mountain with Laozi’s masterpiece named Tao Te Ching to cultivate his Tao, to over 600 years ago when Zhang Sanfeng skillfully integrated the essence of the I Ching and Tao Te Ching with martial arts to establish the Internal Martial Arts system, the Taoist philosophy and Tai Chi techniques with Chinese wisdom have complemented and sustained each other at Wudang Mountain for thousands of years.

Wudang Mountain is vibrant because of Tai Chi and profound because of Taoism. Here, every pine and cypress embody the balance of hardness and softness in Tai Chi martial arts, and every mountain spring resonates with the thousand-year-long chant of Taoist philosophy.
